Appropriate Use

Our Work

Appropriate Use Strategy

Our Appropriate Use Strategy will guide us in building a collaborative, coordinated, pan-Canadian approach to the appropriate use of medications that improves safety, health outcomes, and sustainability. We will do this by:

  • Empowering the public, patients, and caregivers to make informed choices with their medications that reflect their personal goals and values
  • Equipping clinicians with evidence-based tools to help them deliver care aligned with best practices
  • Supporting policy-makers and decision-makers in implementing appropriate use programs and policies based on the best available evidence and patient perspectives
  • Connecting health system partners to limit duplication, maximize resources, and share learnings on promising programs.

1.	Canadian Drug Agency Transition Office final report released publicly – July 2024
2.	Formed own the Appropriate Use Advisory Committee – September 2024
3.	Engagements with interested parties – Early 2025
4.	Submit final strategy to Health Canada – Mid 2025

The Appropriate Use Strategy will incorporate diverse voices through engagement with interested parties, including our Appropriate Use Advisory Committee, provincial and territorial governments, Indigenous organizations, patients and caregivers, and prescribers. The Strategy will also build on insights and recommendations from the Final Report produced by the former Canadian Drug Agency Transition Office Appropriate Use Advisory Committee (now sunsetted).

The final Appropriate Use Strategy will be published and shared publicly in mid-2025.
