Medical imaging is critical to diagnosing, monitoring, and sometimes treating a vast array of illnesses and conditions from cancer to traumatic injury. As imaging technologies advance, there is a need to keep track of where imaging capacity exists.
What Is the CMII?
Canada’s Drug Agency created the Canadian Medical Imaging Inventory (CMII) to document current practices and developments in the supply, distribution, technical operations, and general clinical and research use of advanced imaging equipment across Canada. This information may be used to inform capital planning and equipment replacement strategies, identify gaps in service, and anticipate future demand.
What Did We Do?
- Approximately every 2 years, Canada’s Drug Agency takes stock of the medical imaging equipment in Canada to better understand what equipment exists and how it is used. The CMII survey is intended to be completed by administrators of health care facilities that operate specialized imaging technology, specifically CT, MRI, SPECT-CT, PET, PET-CT, and PET-MRI.
- The report tracks where imaging equipment exists, exam volumes, hours of operation, and types of use. Comparisons with other countries are reported as well as trends and projections on imaging capacity. This information can be used to inform capital planning and equipment replacement strategies, identify gaps in service, and anticipate future demand.
