Canada's opioid overdose crisis has led to increased deaths and hospitalizations due to potent illicit opioids like fentanyl. In response, harm reduction strategies, including safer supply programs, have been implemented. These programs provide pharmaceutical-grade opioids to individuals at high risk of opioid-related toxicity, reducing reliance on dangerous unregulated drugs and connecting them to health services. Hydromorphone, a potent opioid, is a key drug in these programs due to its safety profile and predictable dosing. Decision-makers seek to understand trends in hydromorphone prescribing and utilization for pain management and safer supply programs. The study will analyze utilization from 2018 to 2023, stratified by geography, age, sex, and putative indication (pain management or safe supply), to provide insights for policy-making.
