Aphakia is the absence of the lens of the eye due to surgical removal, a perforating wound or ulcer, or congenital anomaly. Interventions for optical correction of aphakia include external devices, such as glasses or contact lenses, and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, which offers a permanent solution. However, the optimal timing of IOL implantation in pediatric patients with aphakia is unclear. IOL implantation for infants aged 12 months or younger would reduce the need for compliance with alternative external optical devices and the associated ongoing costs for caregivers; however, concerns remain about the appropriate lens power to select and the long-term effectiveness of IOL implantation.
This systematic review addressed the clinical effectiveness and safety of IOL implantation in infants aged 12 months or younger. In addition, the economic literature was reviewed to evaluate whether this intervention is cost-effective.
