2017 Dr. Jill M. Sanders Award of Excellence in Health Technology Assessment

CADTH is pleased to award Devidas Menon, MHSA, PhD, BSc, with the 2017 Dr. Jill M. Sanders Award of Excellence in Health Technology Assessment, which recognizes individuals whose outstanding achievements have significantly advanced the field of health technology assessment (HTA) in Canada.

An extraordinary leader in HTA, who has pioneered new methodologies, Dr. Menon mentored the next generation of investigators and championed evidence-based policy- and clinical decision-making.

Dr. Menon is currently Professor and Senior Advisor in the Health Technology & Policy Unit at the University of Alberta School of Public Health. He was the first Executive Director of CADTH, which, at the time, was known as the Canadian Coordinating Office for Health Technology Assessment (CCOHTA). In the early nineties, Dr. Menon helped establish the first international network of HTA agencies. In the course of his 34-year career as a professor, Dr. Menon has introduced students to HTA and its importance for decision-makers, and encouraged them to participate in the process as HTA producers, methodologists, knowledge mobilizers, and users.

Dr. Menon holds a doctorate in physics and a Master of Health Services Administration. His expertise and research areas include biomedical engineering, methodologies for the assessment of technologies, the conduct of comprehensive HTAs, the study of processes for decision-making about coverage and reimbursement of new technologies and technology-based health services, and the role of public or social values in resource allocation decision-making. He is considered to have forged the way in HTA in Canada and set the path for future HTA leaders.
